Leonids: Age 19
This past week has been full of “good stuff” (don’t you wish you were as articulate as I am?)Last weekend I went to a Jewish film festival and saw “Promises,” a documentary following Israeli and Palestinian children through their lives. The documentary itself was okay, but i had some criticisms.
Note: I’m writing this in the dining commons, and now they serve veggie burgers all day everyday.. you just have to request them. Two out of the four times that I’ve requested them, they’ve been “served” to my table. They treat vegetarians well :)
The documentary did not tackle any issues of the conflict or lead anyone to a greater understanding of the conflict. As Saara (A Palestinian woman who saw the video also) said, “It was benign.”
On Monday evening, while sitting in my chair in front of the computer, I turned around and… Cassandra! She came back! She’s actually still here. This made me a very happy Javed, to see and hear her again.
On Tuesday I found out that I aced two tests- methods in Psych and Middle Eastern History. I’m trying to shoot for a 3.5 GPA this semester (I actually HAVE to get a 3.5 this semester to stay in the study abroad program that I’m in.. eep!
After class on Tuesday I decided to go to the DC, and eat the beloved veggie burgers and Cassandra appears out of no where, “Do you eat here often?” So we sat and talked and ate icecream, nummy in my tummy!
You know those people who you pray for and thank God for on a daily basis? Well, she, along with a lot of people on my dorm are definitely part of that group, and that group is getting bigger, which, in my opinion is awesome.
Later that night I played scrabble, and decided to go try out for MTV’s the real world. Yes, thats right, my dream was to infiltrate mainstream television and spread progressive views all over the country-mwahahaha. SO I ended up staying up all night, and leaving at 6 am on Wednesday.
I was pretty disappointed with the application process. I stayed in line for 3 hours, to be grouped with 10 people to have a discussion headed by Lori (present real world cast member) she suggested that we talk about dating, and cheating… subjects i don’t know much about since i havent done either. That didn’t mean I couldn’t talk about them though. Imagine a game of hungry hungry hippos, but this time, we weren’t trying to eat pellets, we were trying to talk over each other.
And then we were huddled upstairs, when someone came up and said, “So and so, we had a problem with your application” Actually, the “problem” was that they got to the 2nd round. Oh well, at least the mystery is over.
The rest of wednesday fizzled by pretty fast.. falling in and out of consciousness
On Thursday I went to class until 6:30, and found out Ramadan started on Friday (Ramadan Mubarak btw). I decided I was going to back cheesecake the next morning, so I went and bought groceries.. including… oh oh oh sparkling apple cider.. my new favorite drink!
The next morning I made 3 cheesecakes from scratch, and then went to the craft center to meet Soul, where she started making a beaded bracelet? necklace? and I started outlining something I want to paint sometime… that night, i fell asleep on my bed with the door open, and soul woke me up at around 9 o clock. In the span of 5 minutes, 5 more people were in my room and we were eating cheesecake and drinking sparkling apple cider.. while I was trying to figure out where I was and where I was going. Soul was going to take me to a free show in a dorm next to mine, so we left the spontaneous party .. to find an almost empty room with a band playing for a not so enthusiastic five people.
I explained to Soul, after we started walking around looking for people to bring down, that I needed to learn how to loosen up. And then, they played “I come from a land down under.” For some reason (well .. because i love 80’s music) this hit my “loosey goosey” spot, and I was dancing, and i left all the insecurities behind me, as the group of people surrounding me started dancing.. I needed that, i definitely needed that.
On sunday morning at 4 am, I started walking in an easterly direction, and found a house next to a patch of soft grass. There, I laid down for 2 hours and watched the Leonid meteor shower while reflecting on my life. You could say I was in a trance.
And today is monday, and I made a couple more cheesecakes… (i think im all cheesecaked out)
