ManHunt: Written At Age 15
I must say that I was a semi-stupid child (but isn’t everyone?). We, A group of 11-12 year old kids played basketball at Derek’s house. Derek resided just down the block from me. Since we played basketball every day, we decided to try and make things a bit more interesting and play man hunt (sort of team hide and seek).
I was on the team that was hiding (i never liked looking for people anyway), and a few of us decided to hide under a wooden deck attached to a neighbors house). This deck was elevated, so there was this wicker criss-cross pattern wood that stood between us and underneath the deck. We carefully removed one of the light wooden panels and huddled inside, and replaced the panel.
Within a few minutes, they spotted us underneath the deck. but they didnt spot me, I squatted in the far corner of the deck. I waited there for twenty minutes, and was about to leave when I heard voices coming from above, in the house. “shit,” I thought. “this is like trespassing or something.”
I waited quietly for the voices to go away. They didn’t. The father or what sounded like the father walked out onto the deck, standing right above me. His son w/ his dog followed and they were talking about a football game. Trying to stay still, my knee’s ached the red stone pebbles beneath me refused to shutup!
The dog knew I was there, sniffing the cracks. He barked. The father walked inside, but his son and dog stayed there. Sweating like a pig, I thought I’d never get out of there. Finally, they opened a sliding door and went in. Seeing my chance, I jumped through the wicker wood that separated me from freedom. It broke; I bled, but ran for my life….not looking back. I found Derek’s house and there he was, with one other person, asking where i had went.
When I explained, they laughed and told me everyone had gone home 15 minutes ago. I still daydream about squatting under that deck. Going through all the possibilities of events, getting caught, getting shot, or getting peed on by that dog.
