Muslim-ish Podcasts Roundup 2/10/07
After discovering that Azam is just as much of a podcast addict as I am, I thought I’d spread the news. Hopefully it’ll turn into a weekly thing, since it is now all I listen to at work. You can subscribe to these via ITunes or listen to em individually.
Islamophonic – Definitely the newest on the Muslim podcast block, Islamophonic promises to “provide meaningful listening for educated middle class British Muslims.” This, their latest podcast, deals with alcohol and Islam.
Hijjy’s ‘Pinion: I love the music. It makes for an exciting listen. I also love the host, and the topics covered. What I’m not loving is the “Fatwa” section, where they just parrot the silly rulings of mr. imam uncle, without mention of any debate on the issue. For instance, the host maintained that it was forbidden for women to pluck their eyebrows and there was a whole commentary on how “Islam is a way of life.” It frustrates me that even the Muslims who live relatively balanced lives still tow the line of uncle imam’s who, instead of dealing with real issues, focus on plucking.
Alt.Muslim Review – Twins Shahed and Zahed put together another lovely podcast. This time bringing you a personal account of Hajj.
Hijjy’s ‘Pinion: Alt.Muslim’s podcast is pretty consistent. My favorite thus far has been about Muslim artists going mainstream, about which I will be posting at a later date. I feel like they could spice it up with some more energetic music, but other than that, it’s a solid podcast.
Democracy Now – While not a Muslim Podcast, there is so much in the news about Muslims that it deserves a listen. Besides, Amy Goodman kicks ass. This week she had Palestinian Professor Sami Al-Arian in his first broadcast interview of his four-year imprisonment. Also this week, there was a discussion about the controversy surrounding Blackwater USA, one of the thousands of private “security” contractors in Iraq. Not to mention the particularly strange partnership of Walmart and Labor Unions to push for Universal Health Care.
Hijjy’s ‘Pinion: I love Amy Goodman. That is all.
