My Dorm Room: Age 19

You walk down the hall in a hippie-ish dorm at a state university, and suddenly hear Dar Williams- Are You Out There blasting from a room.

Out of sheer curiousity, you peek in.

Posters mark the walls of the semi-messy room. Ani Difranco, Che Guevara, prints of Picasso’s work, something entitled, “Ten Reasons Why Media Education Matters,” and a posterboard with Arabic script on it. You happen to know Arabic (because you just do, okay?), and know that it says “Gender Equality Now.”

To the right you see the occupant’s desk. On it, lies a book shelf, containing titles such as, “The Qur’an, The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and various other books by Fatima Mernissi, Basim Musallam, Farid Esack, Amina Wadud, Edward Said etc…”

Also on the desk lie two pears, a computer, a video camera, Eternity for men cologne, and multiple articles about Palestinians.

In the far left corner, a bed can be found. However, it’s not made, and a bookbag lays on top of it.

Because you are a curious little bugger, you open the bag and find numerous psychology books, a course packet for “Women in Islam,” as well as a book on Middle Eastern History.
Next to the bed, a corkboard can be found. Attached, a piece of paper:
“To Do: Lab report, get reimbursed 134 dollars for making flyers (receipt is in the wallet), make flyers for computer help, see if I can get to visit Garia, ask parents about plane tickets, go paint w/ LilRugger, write script for autobiography, finish reading for tests on Tuesday, E-mail Garia, Misa, & Eileen”

On the floor next to the bed are a pair of worn sandals with what appears to be duct tape on them.

In the fridge? Figure-Eight Danish’s

By this time, you pretty much know what kind of person the occupant is, and so you leave, and tonight, tonight you will have nightmares of a humanoid-figure-eight danish that sings Dar Williams’ songs in Arabic.
