San Fran After 9/11
Last weekend I took a little trip to California…
but before that, I ran over a squirrel with my bike. What are the chances? All I saw was a puffball underneath my tires. After I ran it over, I heard screeching. It is disabled. I feel bad, and then I felt worse when the people looked at me as if i was a cruel human being.
On to California
The military presence in San Jose is kind of scary. In Chicago, it was visible, but in San Jose, they actually had fingers on triggers. The funny thing is, Frisk, someone I met on the plane, walked through a metal detector on the way back to rhode island, and the security guard asked him, “did it beep?”
Just another reason why we need a living wage :-P
Anywho, I was going to San Francisco primarily to meet the Progressive Muslim Network moderators. I arrived on Friday afternoon, and it was pretty much a slow day, I met Taf (slept on his kitchen floor) and Nickel (Muslim Scholar) that night, and we re-introduced ourselves to each other at cafe la boheme, and afterward ate some pakistani food (mmmm aloo palak).
On Saturday morning we met the last of our group, Cairo (a woman from …) and participated in an anti war rally. Later on in the day we hung out in Cafe La Boheme for hours, meeting about the network itself and where it is going.
Sunday, Taf took me to Muir Woods, we hiked up a mountain, and I saw gigantic redwood trees. On the way back we drove down pacific coast highway, probably the most beautiful highway in the world (see pictures). Sunday night I went to UCBerkley, where even the men and women who look like fraternity and sorority members (respectively) are activists… well at least the people I met.
Monday morning I flew out, riding in a death trap. I was sweating the whole way flying back…. at least it didn’t have propellers :)
I should also mention that San Francisco’s transportation system.. also known as BART kicks ass. It is carpeted, and the seats are cushioned. Basically, it’s a moving living room. I wouldn’t mind hanging out in it all day with a group of people.
