This Is What A Police-State Looks Like: MacArthur Park
During a May Day [Peaceful] Rally in Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park, the police began to shoot/attack people (including journalists) with rubber bullets. From what I understand this was a permitted rally.

I’m ready to move to New Zealand. My family seems to like Brunei.
Update: As much as I [halfway?] joke about leaving the country, in many ways, I think it is important to stay here and fight the good fight. But it would be nice, you know, to have universal health care and have very few of my tax dollars going to the military industrial complex.
What do you all think? If you had a choice, if you had the option. Stay or Go :) Why? What is making you stay? What makes you want to go?

Doesn’t anyone like Malaysia?

i feel exactly like you do; although i always know i can get out of this country and not have to deal with the strange martial law that’s always in effect – a part of me feels really inclined to stay and ‘fight the good fight’.
if you don’t stay and fight it, it’s only a matter of time before US imperialism expands and everything you thought you left behind in america is on your doorstep in New Zealand.
it’s important not to avoid (mentally OR physically) the issues.
UmmFarouq at 4 May 07 :: #
I don’t think I avoided any issues. I wanted to leave, so I left. And I’ve never looked back. Alhamdulillah I did it when I did, it was hard, but we’re all thriving. Alhamdulillah.

I want to leave, yes, New Zealand would be wonderful! Malaysia too! But I will leave when I lose vision. I really think us Americans have a much greater responsibility towards the world than we understand or willing to take. And in order to make changes, we need to be here. I will leave only when I will lose hope and I will realize that I am absolutley powerless, my letters and petition to congress means NOTHING! But until then, I am trying… just as much as I can.
Also, I realized before we can say that “just leave”, we need to accomplish something, establish our credibility in the world, and then be able to do something for the world. So, I am staying for a little bit longer, learn as much as I can, and think about what I can do to help. I don’t want to be yet another corporate slave either in America or in a different country. If this place is the real battle field, I rather be here. Even though a side of me does want to get away from everything and start living in Seychelles!
I know, I have unrealistic dreams… but, at least I dream, :P

Malaysia: You are too developed for me. :)
Abeer: interesting you bring that up, ill be posting something in response to the “avoid” comment shortly.
UmmFarouq.. where’d you go? What made you leave? tell us stories!

I’d rather stay here, but not for completely altruistic reasons. I know my whole family wouldn’t leave, and I’d miss them. I did have this conversation with my mom and husband during the last presidentail elections, because we were in London on election day (we voted early, so don’t blame us :)) and my mom and I were joking that we’d just stay there if Bush were reelected, which of course he was, and we didn’t. For me, living here is a part of my jihad and I hope that I do well at it. It’s not for everyone, though, sometimes it is better to move depending on unique life circumstances. I wouldn’t mind living somewhere else for a few years to broaden my perspective. New Zealand does have a kick-bottom education system.

My husband and I seriously want to leave, and have since before we married. But our families are here, and we will likely bear the entire burden of caring for our mothers when they grow older (which is in the not-very-distant future). Not to mention that the two spots that we spent years dreaming of moving to — French Canada and Bavaria, Germany — have become not-so-welcoming places for Muslims.
Ugh, if only these things were simple.

HijabMan what is your take… do you forsee a “Japanese Interment” camp like situation coming to bear soon? Is that why posed the question: Stay or go?
HijabMan at 9 May 07 :: #
Aisha: Doubtful. Though if another Republican gets into office (I doubt that will happen), I may have to start looking for a wife in Canada or New Zealand :)
