Three Beautiful Things Thursday: Car Accident Edition

This week in beauty, we have three lovely things
1. Car Accidents, generally speaking, are not-so-beautiful. Emerging from an accident with car and body unscathed, however, is pretty friggin’ beautiful! Joking aside, Tuesday night, while driving home from a lovely European-style drinking chocolate at Naked Chocolate, I got rear ended. Actually, the woman behind me got rear ended, and as a result, her car bumped pretty forcefully into mine.
As soon as I got hit, I put on my blinkers and parked the car. After inspecting for damage and finding none, I walked over to the car that got hit. As I approached it, a police car arrived. Within a few short minutes and a quick interview, I was cleared to go. On my drive home, I started laughing. I had to let that energy go somehow, right? Laughing, the greatest coping mechanism for stress, ever— even when it makes you look like you have gone nuts.
This was my first car accident, and with it came a slightly sore back and a beautiful reminder of my own mortality and of life: “Get busy! Stop wasting time!”
2. People. One of my bosses handed me a brown paper bag yesterday before I left work and told me not to open it until sundown. Too cute. Thanks for the dried figs, Lisa!
3. The Past. I’ve always toyed with the idea of re-posting all of my entries since the age of 16, when I began to blog regularly. I’ve always been a bit hesitant about that. [This is the part where you can insert the introduction to the Autobiography of Malcolm X, where Malcolm is hesitant about talking about his past, but he does it anyway]. Same conclusion as Malcolm. Over the next few days, take a look at the archives section for stuff I wrote when I was 16. Eek! Here I go!
Bonus: Koshari. This Egyptian dish is like heaven in a bowl. When I lived in Egypt, I’d eat it a few times a week at my favorite spot, Koshari Tahrir. I haven’t had it for a number of years, but tomorrow (Friday) I’ll be on the Upper East Side eating a bunch. If you’d like to join me, leave a comment and I’ll give you the address.

gonna agree totally with you on the car crash thing, I wrote off 2 cars in 2005. What did I get out of the whole thing? a broken nose, crushed confidence in winter, higher insurance but alhamdulillah I was able to walk away from both (including a roll over!) to the astonishment of the ambulance drivers who looked after me following the roll over. Alhamdulillah, grateful doesnt even come close!

:)Car accidents where no one is hurt during Ramadan are especially beautiful, aren’t they? 2 or 3 Ramadans ago, I busted through an abandoned school building that was to become a functional school building the next year.I got the brakes mixed up with the gas. It happens, okay? :) The superintendent of my school came over to inspect the damage and joked “Well, at least you saved us part of the cost of demolition.”

My first (and alh only) car accident was a few years ago in Ramadan as well. Only difference was that it completely screwed up my front bumper and we got sued by the psycho for $3 million. Talk about stress! Thank God (literally) everything worked out in the end and the insurance company took care of the suit and kicked the psycho to the curb.
